Striking Dolphins

Dolphins are symbolic of intelligence and harmony in Asian culture. Here a pair of dolphins calmy swim through an enchanting Asian sea. Dolphins are very unique creatures and highly intelligent. They are part of the toothed wale family which include pilot whales and orcas. Dolphins can be found all across the world but they mostly swim in shallow seas–fresh water or salt water–along the continental shelves. Usually gray in color dolphins often have darker colored backs. The dolphin is a social mammal sometimes swimming in pods of up to a hundred other dolphins. Together they communicate hunt and mate. Most oceanographers believe dolphins have a rich social life and a complicated communication system. They can actually see extremely well and hear 10 times better than humans. The dolphin is actually a mammal and protects itself from cold by having a layer of thick fat all around its body called blubber. For communication and detecting things in their environment dolphins use echolocation to send high-pitched signals out that bounce back from distant objects. By using echolocation the dolphin can determine the whereabouts of various objects such as prey in the ocean. Since man discovered dolphins stories abound on dolphins helping and rescuing humans from perilous situations. Perhaps this is why dolphins are so beloved by most people or it could be their perpetual smile. Dolphins can swim up to 20 mph live up to 40-50 years and dive 250 feet below the surface though they usually stay near the surface.
