Bodhidharma is the founder of Zen Buddhism. He migrated to China from India around 600 BC and is said to have sat in a cave meditating for over seven years to reach enlightenment. This table fan is a tribute to his spirit and quest for realization. In China, Bodhidharma was an outsider, but he was able to pass along the Zen Buddhist tradition to the Chinese. Many Buddhists and Asian people are fond of the legendary Bodhidharma and pay tribute to him. He is often portrayed as a disheveled figure with a beard, as he is in this decorative fan. The back of the fan contains a long poem about him.
