Statues like these are traditional safeguards for the wealth of homes and businesses. As a wandering ascetic, Buddha carries all of his possessions in one bag. Here we see him at rest, casually leaning on the bag. Some say that he does this to keep his meager possessions safe from thieves. His happy expression and carefree demeanor add to the feeling of security. Buddha is aware of the possibility of thievery, but he accepts this like he does everything else. His carefree demeanor is reminder not to worry, to simply do the best we can and take life as it comes. Despite the material use the statue is not lacking in spiritual meaning. Buddha has his prayer beads in hand. Even in this moment of repose he does not forget what is important to him. And of course his simple robes, bare feet, and shaven head are constant reminder of the simple, ascetic lifestyle that he has chosen. The contrast is an interesting one. Buddha is an ascetic, but he still looks after what few possessions he has. The statue is a pleasant reminder that no matter how enlightened a person becomes, they still have to take care of themselves and their things.
