They first came about during the 700s where they worked as female entertainers and waitresses. First, they were called Shirabyoshi and Oiran. They would also act, dance and sing. In 1691, the female entertainers were dubbed Kabuki, and the form of entertainment they performed was called Kabuku. The Kabuki would do erotic performances and dances, and this was the beginning for what's known today as the Kabuki Theater.

By the 1800s, the term Geisha was born, and Geishas were known to do a variety of other things like calligraphy and poetry. The first Geisha were men entertainers and waiters, keeping the guests occupied until the Oiran came. The Geisha soon became a women's occupation that was respected, parting its ways from the erotic behaviors that were often associated with it. Geishas became very popular during this era when feminine beauty among the elite was major.
