Thai depictions of Buddha differ greatly from their Japanese and Chinese counterparts and this statue is an excellent study in those differences. Rather than shaven headed, Buddha is shown with thick, curling hair. Rather than dressed as an impoverished monk, Buddha is shown here in regal garb. Thai depictions of Buddha attempt to portray a more idealized version of him. His body is lean, athletic, and strong, his shoulders are broad, and his skin is smooth. The curling hair is a sign of his humility and the protuberance on the top of his head is a sign of his wisdom. Upon taking up the ascetic life, Buddha is said to have stopped styling his hair, so it grew in its natural shape. The rich robes show him as a divinity, a being wealthier than any king or noble. For all the difference of decoration, the essence of Buddha is maintained through his serene, meditative expression. His eyes are closed in contemplation but his eyebrows are raised, as if he has just had a particularly important revelation. The expression shows both relaxation and focus, calm and control. At nearly two foot high the statue is one of our larger offerings and is a bright and elegant addition to any decor.
