In China, there is a prominent Chinese lantern festival each year where decorative lamps and Chinese hanging lanterns are displayed. The Chinese lantern festival is called Shang Yuan Festival and is held during the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration period. Many of the Chinese paper lanterns that people carry during the festival have designs of dragons or certain Chinese characters. In earlier times, during the Han Dynasty, when the Chinese lantern festival began, only emperors and nobleman carried Chinese paper lanterns.
