In China, the butterfly is a symbol of love. There is a very famous Chinese legend that about a beautiful maiden named Zhu Yingtai. She wanted to be educated, even though in ancient China only boys could go to school. So, she disguised herself as a man. While at school, she met the handsome scholar Liang Shanbo. After years of studying with him, she fell in love with him. She was forced to return home when her father became ill, but, as she left, she told Shanbo she was really a woman and in love with him. Shanbo went to her father to ask for her hand in marriage, but found that her father had already betrothed her to a rich man. Heartbroken, he died. The day of the wedding, she and her wedding party were proceeding towards the site of the wedding when, just as they were passing Liang Shanbo's grave, high winds stopped them from going any further. Zhu Yingtai went to his grave and begged that she be allowed to join him. Suddenly, the ground opened, and she threw herself into his grave. Then, out of the open ground, two butterflies emerged, containing the spirits of Zhu Yingtai and Liang Shanbo. They flew away, to be together forever. This story has been retold many times throughout China, and it is with this spirit of love that we present you our fine Butterfly Blanket Chest. Solidly constructed, hand-painted and featuring beautiful brass hardware, this piece is likely to become a highlight of your home or office décor.
