The art of calligraphy is an important one in China. Chinese language has over forty-seven thousand characters, although not all of them are commonly used. Most Chinese know about three thousand characters. Each character was originally a picture of an animal, a person, or some other physical object, but over time turned into the symbols we see today. They represent a Chinese syllable, and words are put together by combining the characters for each syllable. Because there are so many different characters, the ability to memorize and write a large number of characters is prized and honored. Also respected is the ability to write well, and calligraphy is considered a high art form. In fact, in Imperial China, the ability to write well was a requirement of Chinese Imperial officials, and no one without a steady hand could be successful in government. Even today, the Chinese can take special classes to improve their calligraphy, and there are calligraphy contests where people compete to have the most beautiful hand. You can see the beauty of Chinese calligraphy adorning this blanket chest, which is finished in a warm walnut stain and features fine brass accents. It is a sturdy, hand-painted example of a classic Chinese design, and is likely to become an heirloom of your own.
