Zen Buddhism in Japan is divided into two main schools, the Rinzai school, founded by the monk Myoan Eisai, and the Soto school, brought to Japan in the thirteenth century by the Buddhist monk Dogen Zenji. Dogen and his followers soon established two Soto Zen temples, at Eiheiji and Soji-ji. Soto Zen was popular among the lower classes, just as Rinzai Zen was popular among the upper classes, leading to the medieval Japanese saying, "Rinzai is for samurai, Soto is for peasants." However, in spite of these claims, Soto Zen gained strength among all segments of society. One of the meditation practices of Soto Zen is Shikantaza, Japanese for "just sitting," where the person meditating sits quietly and tries to block out distractions in the outside world. Soto Zen is the most popular Zen school in Japan, with most Japanese at least sometimes following its practices. People worldwide have come to see the benefits that meditation can bring, including reduced stress and vast improvements in health.
