Even though Zen Buddhism is probably the form of Buddhism best known in the west, it was actually a later development in Buddhism. Zen Buddhism was founded sometime in the sixth century in China. Its founding is attributed to Bodhiharma, an Indian Buddhist monk who came to China in the early sixth century. It is said that when he first came to China, he spent nine years in meditation. His holiness soon gained him followers, who he taught the use of meditation as a way to gain enlightenment. Over the centuries, the influence of Zen Buddhism grew, until it became the largest Buddhist school in China. In the twelfth century, the Japanese Buddhist monk Myoan Eisai came to China and learned Zen teachings, which he took back to Japan, establishing the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. Rinzai Zen soon gained in popularity throughout Japan, especially among the upper classes, as it became common among the samurai and at the Emperor's court.
