The origins of Buddhism date back to the fifth century BC. Legend says that an Indian prince named Siddhartha Gautama was the true founder. However, one day, when he was outside the palace walls, he was exposed to poverty, disease, and death. Deeply troubled by this, he decided that he would give up his title and dedicate his life to understanding why there is suffering in the world. He first traveled widely, and met with many holy men, but none of them could explain the origin of suffering. He then decided to fast and become a beggar, but that only left him hungry, and no more knowledgeable of the causes of suffering than before he started. Finally, after long meditation, he came to realize that the cause of suffering is desire and that only by freeing oneself of desire and leading a life of moderation can a person truly become free of suffering and escape the misery of the world. His teachings spread, and now there are millions of people around the world who meditate for both spiritual and health reasons.
