Poetry is one of the most respected of all arts in China, and Chinese poetry has a long history. Chinese poets were often given great riches and positions of importance; at one time skill in poetry was necessary to hold any governmental or administrative position. Some of the greatest and most respected leaders in Chinese history were known for their poetry, which could be used to either prop up or undermine a dynasty or a leader. One of the greatest Chinese poets was probably the Tang poet Wang Wei. An aristocrat of the eighth century, Wang Wei became famous as both a poet and a painter. His poem "One-Hearted" is considered by some to be one of the greatest Chinese love poems of all time. "When the red berries come in springtime, Flushing on your southern branches, Take home an armful, for my sake, As a symbol of our love." This poem is still widely known and recited today. Even in modern China, a facility with poetry is considered vital for anyone who wishes to be known as well educated and well rounded. Take home a little bit of Chinese poetry of your own with our Chinese Poem Bamboo Blinds, which bring new meaning to the idea of form and function.
