The "karo" is the Japanese term for a top ranking samurai, known for his exquisite skill with the sword and ability to lead. The samurai in this painting is wearing a red kimono top and dark colored "hakama", which are the customary samurai pants. The front part of the samurai's head is shaved off in the traditional style. The samurai began doing this (called sakayaki) in the early 16th century to make it easier and more comfortable to wear helmets in battle. The samurai in this painting is in a battle position and ready to draw one of his two katana battle swords. This spectacular lacquer painted wall carving will make outstanding Asian decoration on any wall. A brass hanger at the top of the carving makes mounting this treasured piece quick and easy.
