Japanese lacquerware is prized as the finest in the world and is one of Japan's most important cultural assets. Our Hand Lacquered Chopsticks are a rare example of traditional Japanese lacquerware that dates back up to 8,000 years. A high quality piece of lacquerware requires the skills of several different artists, and sometimes up to ten years, to complete. There are a great many styles of Japanese lacquerware, each with its own history and aesthetic. One style begins by coloring the base black, covering it with coats of red or orange, then partially polishing the upper coats away, so that the black undercoat shows through in places, giving the impression of a worn, utilitarian object. Our traditional Hand Lacquered Chopsticks are of this style. These black with burnt red chopsticks may not be the brightly colored, fancy printed design of modern chopsticks made from single coatings of petroleum-based lacquer, but they impart a sense of history not found in today's lacquereware. Packaged in a nice chopsticks box 9 inches long. Hand-made in Japan.
