 Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

China is one of the oldest and most intricate cultures on Earth, dating back thousands of years. With so much history, it’s no surprise that China has a traditional holiday for almost every month of the calendar. On the fifth day of the fifth Chinese lunar month (around the end of May) almost all of China will celebrate a significant national holiday known as the Dragon Boat Festival (called Duan Wu by the Chinese).

The history behind this amazing holiday dates back over two thousand years to the Warring States period. The great patriotic poet of the time, Chu Yuan, drowned himself in protest of the Emperor. The people of the time were inspired by his actions and had sympathy for Chu Yuan. They decided to launch into the river he drowned in with dragon boats. The people then threw bamboo leaves filled with rice into the river to protect Chu Yuan from being eaten by the fish. The fish thereby ate the dumpling rice instead of the famed poet’s body, keeping it intact.

Today, the Chinese commemorate the spirit of Chu Yuan by racing boats shaped like dragons and eating rice dumplings called “tzungtzu”. This festival reminds people of the importance of loyalty and commitment. It is also a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year.
